Humane Society

Hunter and I took some time after his allergy appt to run some errands. After much patience with me while I browsed some fabrics and a little excitement on his end with a $1 purchase of a raw wood birdhouse he can later paint we headed to the humane society.
We've been considering chickens or a bunny his spring for family pets. The chickens I've been contemplating for 3 years, but the bunny is a new venture. I fell in love with holland lops and the comical looking English lop. Then last week a friend posted a photo of a peach and white holland or mini lop that was dumped at our post office! sad someone could dump something so precious!
I asked if she was willing to give it up, alas she knew the treasure she was given.
So at the humane society we browsed through the forgotten furry ones with lonely eyes. It always seems a good idea and ends up being so depressing. We saw lots of fat, old cats with missing or shaved bits of fur. Little pups with high pitched yelps and gooey eyes. And large bristly necked dogs with scary vibes and a few lackluster old souls who seem to know their place in this sad existence. It broke my heart and I just felt guilty for teasing these animals with no intention of taking one home. But hunter didn't skip a beat and eagerly visited each cage and happily entering the free roaming rooms offering to play, pet or brush each cat or dog. After seeing them all he noticed signs on the cages of the pups announcing if they had been walked that day or not. We asked if we could take one out and they said we could take them to a play room or outside. Hunter painstakingly chose which one he'd take.

He picked a perky, little white dog named rootbeer. As soon as we got him into the playroom I could see rootbeer wanted to be outside and made it even more apparent as he hiked his leg on the trashcan. This brought Hunter to hystericswe opted to take him on a walk too. After a brief few minutes and some more hiking of hindquarters on rootbeer's part we had to put him back. But, hunter picked one more dog to walk a dog he said looked like Gidget, a longer haired golden brown terrier named Yoshi. You could see why he liked this one. :)
Hunter just may have his first volunteering job. This token of friendship and care he bestowed was priceless.
I hope we can continue to visit and walk, play and care for these poor forgotten souls.

  1. Hunter is such a blessing to everyone around him, even the non humans. He has such a good heart I love him.

  2. OOH what a heart that little man has! And how hard to go somewhere like that... I'd cry the entire way home... So are you going to get a bunny or chickens??
